Articles on Modernism / North Shore Yacht Club

North Shore Yacht Club, 1937
Albert Frey

The Yacht Club was conceived as the linchpin of a future Lake Tahoe-like property, envisioned as a winter resort offering swimming, fishing, water sports and boating to vacationers. Real-estate investors bought into the utopia and the area flourished.

In the 1960’s the fragile environment began to suffer, the neighboring agriculture was increasingly polluting the Salton Sea and the lake became subject to rapidly fluctuating levels of salinity. Eventually the lake became so poisonous virtually all fish died off. Even today the Salton Sea emits a repugnant stench, extending far into the landscape beyond the bounds of the lake’s shoreline.
