Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg Chair in 1958 for the lobby and reception areas of the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. This organically shaped chair has since become synonymous with Danish furniture design throughout the world. Because of the unique shape, the Egg Chair guarantees privacy. The shell of the Egg is of polyurethane foam with fiberglass reinforcement and cognac leather. The base is injection molded aluminum.

The Egg Chair requires expert restoration, hours of painful hand stitching are required to join the front and back panels. It's a restoration that's not for the faint of heart. When examining a newly restored Egg Chair look for smooth seams that are free of puckers. Stretching the hide to conform to the compound shape of the egg is critical and truly physically painful for the restorer. It's a process that can't be neglected and is necessary to show off the beautiful smooth curves of this unique piece.

This chair came to Modern Conscience full of memories. The Danish owner’s father purchased the chair new in Denmark in the 1940’s and held his children in the chair for story time every night before bed. The owner had immigrated to the United States from Denmark and the chair came along as one of the prized possessions that could not be left behind. His father had recently passed and he wanted the chair restored so that he could carry on the tradition with his own children.

By request, the chair was restored in as close to the original leather as possible. A buttery soft cognac leather was chosen. After countless hours of remolding new foam, highly technical hand sewing, and polishing of the base, the chair was ready for many more lifetimes of memories.
